It is believed Zoom will initiate bankruptcy proceedings today.Hugh Boyle is the chair and principal shareholder of Zoom Airlines and the founder and chair of the Go Travel Direct, Canada’s first direct-sell tour operator. Both businesses have grown rapidly in the six years since inception. Zoom Airlines is a low cost carrier flying to Europe from number of Canadian locations. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are apparently offering special fares to assist Zoom customers that have been affected by the suspension of Zoom’s services.Both Zoom Airlines Inc and Zoom Airlines Ltd, the Canadian and U.K. airlines, are filing for insolvency proceedings in their home countries today.

Air Transat: Change in Excess Baggage Fees
Air Transat would like to inform travel agents that effective September 9, 2008, the following changes to excess baggage fees will be applicable on all Air Transat flights.
If the total weight exceeds the maximum baggage allowance, the following additional charge per excess kilogram will be applicable on all flights in Economy and Club Classes:

Baggage Allowance – Reminder:
For passengers in economy class (excluding infants under 2 years of age) there is a maximum baggage allowance of 20 kilograms of checked baggage per passenger (40 kilograms in Club Transat Class), to be carried without additional charge, subject to the following exceptions: 50 kilograms for flights between Canada and Haiti, 30 kilograms for flights between Canada and Greece and Italy, 25 kilograms for flights between Canada and Amsterdam or Nice, as well as for Florida cruise passengers, and 23 kilograms for flights between Canada and all other points in Europe (except the United Kingdom and Ireland).
A piece of checked baggage must not exceed 32 kilograms, or 70 lbs. Baggage exceeding this weight will be shipped as cargo, and cargo charges will then apply.

RE: AIRLINE POLICIES – HURRICANE GUSTAV
Due to the expected disruption in travel resulting from the passing of Hurricane Gustav, the airlines have issued the following advisories related to ticket changes:
Air Jamaica:
Air Jamaica will waive the change fee for customers traveling to or from Jamaica between August 27 – September 1, 2008. Clients must change their reservations to begin travel as late as September 1, 2008. Further information is contained on the attached.
American Airlines:
American Airlines will waive the change fee for customers traveling from Florida between August 25 – September 1, 2008. Clients must change their reservations to begin travel as late as September 1, 2008.
US Airways:
US Airways will waive the change fee for customers traveling to or from Jamaica between August 26 (11:30am ET) – September 1, 2008 (11:30pm ET). Customers can move their itinerary up to seven days before or after the scheduled origination date.
Delta Airlines:
Customers may make a one time one-time change to the ticket without penalty for travel to or from Jamaica between August 26 – September 1, 2008. Customers must change their reservations to begin travel as late as September 1, 2008.
Changes to origins and destinations may result in an increase in fare. Any difference between the original ticket and the new ticket will be collected at the time of booking.

Apple Vacations has a ticketing policy change
For contracted/bulk scheduled Air Vacation Packages.
REMINDER: Apple Vacations recently began ticketing
contracted/bulk scheduled airfares at the time of initial
deposit. This change resulted in the following benefits
for your clients:
• Protects your clients against fuel surcharge increases.
• For ticketed reservations, most airlines offer a full refund of the ticket cost or protect passengers on the next available flight when there are schedule changes or cancelled flights.
New Deposit Requirements.
Full cost of the fare is required at time of deposit for contracted/bulk scheduled air.
• This new policy applies to bulk fares for all air carriers except Go Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. We will continue to ticket those carriers’ bulk fares according to the rules of the fare (normally 21 days prior to departure).
• Published Fares for all airlines will continue to ticket per the rules of the fare (normally within 72 hours of booking).
• This change does not apply to contracted scheduled air groups. Groups will continue to be ticketed 35 days prior to departure. In addition, clients purchasing “AV-OK” will be protected

If you have contacted them recently for a group quote or to book a group, you may have noticed their new quoting and booking process and update forms, as well as some amendments of their group Terms and Conditions.
In addition to the forms and updated processes, Southwest Vacations is pleased to announce online check-in for groups. Passengers must log onto southwestvacations.com and click “Check-In Online”. Here passengers will be able to secure their place in the boarding line (sections A,B, or C). There is no change in the ticket type though – Southwest Vacations group packages still utilize paper tickets. Passengers must turn in their paper tickets for their boarding pass at the airport.

Starwood to open 100th hotel in China Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has marked a milestone in Greater China with the signing of the Sheraton Beijing Dongcheng Hotel, its 100th hotel in the area. Sheraton was the first international hotel chain to enter China when the historic Great Wall Beijing Sheraton Hotel was established in 1985. In September, Starwood will debut its first aloft hotel in China, with the opening of the aloft Beijing, Haidian. Starwood is growing aggressively throughout Asia Pacific with 80 hotels currently under construction. China is fueling growth in the region and more than half of Starwood’s pipeline in Asia Pacific is in Greater China, where the company expects to double its portfolio by 2011. In addition to the 43 hotels Starwood currently operates in China, Starwood has 57 new properties scheduled to open. These include 22 Sheraton hotels, 12 Four Points by Sheraton hotels, eight Westin hotels, five W hotels, four St Regis hotels, three Le Meridien hotels, two aloft hotels and one The Luxury Collection brand hotel. Located in Dongcheng District, Sheraton Beijing Dongcheng Hotel will feature 470 rooms, meeting space, three restaurants and bar, a health club, spa and indoor heated swimming pool.

IMPORTANT APPLE ONLINE UPDATE
Effective Saturday August 9th, Apple Vacations will upgrade www.myapplevacations.com to display Scheduled Air packages in the same fashion as Charter packages. This new upgrade will eliminate the need to manually add the cost of airfare to the hotel cost in the price breakdown screen.
Additionally, to remain complaint with their scheduled Airline partners, Apple Vacations is no longer able to display the cost of the air portion until the booking is completed. However, to enable you to know the air cost, they have updated their shopping basket. If you have booked a published airfare, simply check the corresponding box and click the “calculate” button. The cost of the published airfare will display in the Calculate Box.
If you have booked a contracted fare, simply check the corresponding boxes of the hotel and the airfare and then click “calculate” button. Subtract the hotel price from the combined price and you will know the cost of the contracted airfare.

Egypt’s ancient pyramids at Giza get makeover
Egypt unveiled on Monday the first stage of an elaborate project to modernize the site and make it more tourist-friendly
The monuments may be glorious, but visiting Egypt’s famed Giza Pyramids has long been a nightmare, with hawkers peddling camel rides and pharaonic trinkets hustling tourists relentlessly at every turn. But now the hustlers are gone, as Egypt unveiled on Monday the first stage of an elaborate project to modernize the site and make it more tourist-friendly, complete with security cameras and a 12-mile fence with infrared sensors surrounding the site. The long metal fence encircling the site is peppered with infrared and motion detectors. Tourists enter through a new brick entrance building, with half a dozen gates equipped with metal detectors and X-ray machines. Once inside, their every step is closely watched by 199 closed-circuit cameras covering every corner of the sprawling plateau. The changes are part of a $26 million project that began seven years ago to improve the site, Hawass said. Still to come are a new lighting system, a cafeteria, and a visitors center and bookshop that will give better information on the pyramids, where tourist guidance is sparse. Once the project is complete, golf cars will drive tourists around the site, similar to those in use in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor and other ancient sites in Egypt.
